Ocean City, Maryland may be best-known as a summertime destination: indeed, one of the preeminent summer beach resort getaways on the East Coast. But, in actual fact, OCMD is very much a year-round attraction, with plenty to offer even in the heart of winter.
And with upscale accommodations with us here at the Ocean City Ashore Resort & Beach Club, you’ll enjoy a warm, cozy, and very well-appointed home base right along this famous beachfront!
Here’s a look at just some of the things you can do while savoring our seaside hospitality in OCMD.
Take in a Show at the Ocean City Performing Arts Center
The calendar of concerts, theatrical productions, and more at the Ocean City Performing Arts Center (4001 Coastal Hwy), set within the Roland E. Powell Convention Center, remains stacked during the winter.
Upcoming events here include a holiday concert by the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra on December 4th, featuring soprano Rochelle Bard; the Mayor’s New Year Event – The Greatest Piano Men on December 30th, celebrating the music of Beethoven to Billy Joel, Elton John to Stevie Wonder; and the Ocean Pines Children’s Theater production of Disney’s Moana, Jr. on January 6th and 7th.
And mark your calendars for The B.B. King Experience Featuring Claudette King on January 13th, which’ll feature the legendary guitarist’s daughter alongside B.B. King’s Blues Band.
Visit the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum
Learn about local history, the daring exploits of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, and OCMD marine ecology at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum (813 S. Atlantic Ave). Explore the 1891-built Ocean City Station and peruse its daily logbook, and see artifacts from the bygone days of the Ocean City Boardwalk (including the delightfully creepy “Queen of the Fun House”: the one and only Laughing Sal).
The museum’s Aquarium Room features live native sealife such as seahorses, blue crabs, American eels, and horseshoe crabs, while the “Sands of the World” exhibit shows off beach sand from all over the planet’s seashores—including, naturally, some of our very own, utterly world-class OCMD sand.
Walk the Beach & the Boardwalk
Speaking of: Our magnificent beachfront, mere steps from your room here at the Ocean City Ashore Resort & Beach Club, is magical to stroll (with plenty of elbow room) in the wintertime, with the Atlantic always serving up stellar seasonal beauty.
And the famous, three-mile-long Ocean City Boardwalk remains very much walkable, bikeable, and otherwise tourable during this refreshingly quiet season.
Explore the Galleries & Studios of the Ocean City Center for the Arts
Another standout indoor attraction easy to reach from your Ocean City Ashore Resort & Beach Club, the Ocean City Center for the Arts (502 94th St.) serves as home for the non-profit Art League of Ocean City.
The two-level gallery features local and regional artists, with working studios (a pottery workshop among them) and classrooms rounding out this fine facility. Opening receptions for monthly exhibits fall on the first Friday of the month.
Daytrip to Assateague Island
The wonderfully wild, pony-roamed barrier island of Assateague is just a hop, skip, and a jump to the south from OCMD. Winter is a rewarding time to visit the amazing Assateague Island National Seashore, given the lack of crowds and the highly visible wildlife. The Seashore’s Assateague Island Visitor Center is open year-round.
